On February 26, please join us for Poems Made by Walking, a Writer’s Studio workshop hosted by Hua Xi.

This workshop will look at poets who centered walking, including works by Antonio Machado, C.S. Giscombe, Richard Long and others. Through artworks, poems and activities, participants will examine ties between geography and poetry, between text and the landscape, and ultimately reconsider the distinction between a walk and a poem. Poetry has had a long historical relationship with the landscape, shaping the names of places and helping to pass down their mythologies. Landscapes have also shaped written language, including the shapes of poetry and how it appears on the page. After studying these ties, students will make their own poems by walking around.

Hua Xi (she/they) is a current Stegner Fellow in Poetry. Her poems have appeared in The Nation, The New Republic, The Atlantic, and elsewhere. She previously won the Boston Review Poetry Contest, the Eavan Boland Emerging Poet Award, and an NEA Fellowship. She loves long walks.
