Minor

The Minor

  • The creative writing minor is a six-course minor (30 units), compatible with most majors on campus.
  • Students must select either the Prose, Poetry, or Fiction into Film track.
  • To declare a Creative Writing minor, visit the Student page on Axess. No hard copy forms are required.
  • To expedite your declaration, make sure to list all 6 courses you plan to take and/or have taken for your minor.
  • All courses must be taken for a letter grade.
  • Courses taken abroad or at other institutions may not be counted towards workshop courses required for the minor. 

 

Prose Track

Suggested Order:

  1. English 90 Fiction Writing or 91 Creative Nonfiction
  2. English 146 Development of the Short Story 
  3. One 5-unit English literature elective course 
  4. English 190 Intermediate Fiction Writing or 191 Intermediate Creative Nonfiction Writing
  5. English 92 Reading and Writing Poetry
  6. Another English 190, 191, or 290 Advanced Fiction, or 198L Levinthal Tutorial

Any course number ending in a letter(s) also counts. For example, English 91A fulfills the English 91 requirement, and English 190YA fulfills the English 190 requirement.

 

Poetry Track

Suggested Order:

  1. English 92 Reading and Writing Poetry
  2. English 160 Poetry and Poetics
  3. One 5-unit English literature elective course
  4. English 192 Intermediate Poetry Writing
  5. English 90 Fiction Writing or English 91 Creative Nonfiction
  6. Another English 192 Intermediate Poetry, 292 Advanced Poetry, or 198L Levinthal Tutorial 

Any course number ending in a letter(s) also counts. For example, English 92AP fulfills the English 92 requirement.

 

Fiction Into Film Track

Suggested Order:

  1. English 90 Beginning Fiction Writing
  2. English 146 Development of the Short Story
  3. English 190F Fiction Into Film
  4. One 5-unit English literature elective course
  5. One 5-unit course from the English 190 series 
  6. English 190SW Script Writing Intensive or 198F Hoffs-Roach Tutorial
