Jamel Brinkley was raised in the Bronx and Brooklyn, New York. He is the author of A Lucky Man: Stories (2018), a finalist for the National Book Award and winner of the Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence. A graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, he was also the 2016-2017 Carol Houck Smith Fellow at the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing. His work has appeared in A Public Space and Ploughshares, among other places, and has been selected twice for The Best American Short Stories. He is currently working on new stories and a novel.
