D. R. MacDonald is the pen name of David R. MacDonald. Born in Boularderie, Nova Scotia and raised in Ohio, he is a lecturer emeritus of creative writing at Stanford University. He still spends summers at the family homestead in Cape Breton Island, where  his fiction is set. He has received two Pushcart prizes, an Ingram Merrill Award, and an O. Henry Award for his short fiction. His first novel, Cape Breton Road, became a national bestseller in Canada. His second novel, Lauchlin of the Bad Heart, was a longlisted for the Giller Prize. His latest novel, The Ice Bridge, was published in 2013 by Counterpoint.
